Description:
Originally, Sparta was an all-male planet – an all-male population with everything that implies: babies – male babies only – produced by the so-called Birth Machine from an almost unending supply of fertilized ova brought by Sparta’s founding father, a dyed-in-the-wool misogynist. But unnatural situations rarely stand the test of time, and it wasn’t too long before Sparta bowed to Mother Nature.
But there was still something rather strange about Sparta when John Grimes landed there to await the arrival of his beloved ship Sister Sue . It seemed to him that among the recently transplanted women of Sparta, there was a strange movement afoot. And when the Archon was kidnapped by a group of militant women the press claimed were men, he knew he couldn’t just stand by and watch! Click to expand…

The Last Adieu 2025 (Ryan Cole)

1400251311 Harper Horizon 2025

Catergory: History, Nonfiction

"Memories of the Revolution have come back to life."
In the summer of 1824, the aging Marquis de Lafayette, defeated politically and distraught over the fate of liberty in Europe, set sail one last time from France for America after an absence of forty years.
Across the sea waited a nation transformed: Thirteen colonies were now twenty-four states, stretching from the Atlantic Coast to the Mississippi River. The number of Americans had more than tripled; their industry and creativity had ushered in a new era of individual prosperity and civic improvements. But progress brought worries. Shocks-an economic collapse, a crisis over the westward creep of slavery-foreshadowed a new political age, increasingly democratic and impassioned. The presidential election of 1824 was a precursor to this era. It was fought among four men, and was so bitter and divisive some observers wondered if it heralded the end of the Union. All while the Declaration of Independence neared its fiftieth anniversary and the first generation of Americans passed on, leaving a second to lead their great experiment in liberty into the uncertain future and stirring tender nostalgia for the Revolution and its quickly vanishing stars. Chief among them was Lafayette, the last living major general of the Continental Army.
When he arrived at last in August 1824, the old hero met once more with the young republic. One of the greatest celebrations in American history followed. Citizens put aside their differences and rallied together around the spirit of their Revolution, rejoicing over the return of the "Nation’s Guest," as Lafayette was called. For thirteen months, Lafayette traveled thousands of miles, reaching every state in the Union and met with parades and delirious crowds. The nation was spellbound by their benefactor. And Lafayette was overjoyed and stunned by the nation’s growth and advances, all made possible by the freedom he had fought for long ago.
The Last Adieu narrates Lafayette’s farewell tour, capturing both its spectacular pageantry and emotional impact-not only from Lafayette’s perspective, but through eyewitness accounts and recollections of the everyday Americans who participated in the great celebration. Co-starring the swarm of fascinating characters Lafayette encountered across the American landscape-elderly founding fathers, populist politicians, idealistic reformers-this is not simply the record of an incredible journey, but a panorama of a rising America and a chronicle of a time when, as Lafayette wrote, memories of its Revolution came back to life, and its citizens were united in gratitude to the men who had won it. The Language Of The Night Essays On Writing Science Fiction And Fantasy 1979 (Ursula K. Le Guin)

1668034905 Scribner Book Company 2024

Catergory: Writing, Language Arts, Literary Criticism, Nonfiction

Featuring a new introduction by Ken Liu, this revised edition of Ursula K. Le Guin’s first full-length collection of essays covers her background as a writer and educator, on fantasy and science fiction, on writing, and on the future of literary science fiction.
"We like to think we live in daylight, but half the world is always dark; and fantasy, like poetry, speaks the language of the night." -Ursula K. Le Guin

Le Guin’s sharp and witty voice is on full display in this collection of twenty-four essays, revised by the author a decade after its initial publication in 1979. The collection covers a wide range of topics and Le Guin’s origins as a writer, her advocacy for science fiction and fantasy as mediums for true literary exploration, the writing of her own major works such as A Wizard of Earthsea and The Left Hand of Darkness, and her role as a public intellectual and educator. The book and each thematic section are brilliantly introduced and contextualized by Susan Wood, a professor at the University of British Columbia and a literary editor and feminist activist during the 1960s and ’70s.

A fascinating, intimate look into the exceptional mind of Le Guin whose insights remain as relevant and resonant today as when they were first published. Click to expand…

The Language Of Lies How To Uncover The Liar In Your Life (King, Kirsty)

1529959640 Cornerstone Press 2026

Catergory: Biographies & Memoirs

Brought to you by Penguin.

Narrated by Kirsty King featuring the voices of Alix Dunmore, Sebastian Humphreys and Georgina Sadler.

How can you tell if someone is lying to you? Is it possible to separate the truth from lies in what people say? And when should you trust what you hear?

Everyone lies. We lie to our family, friends, colleagues and strangers. But some lies are extremely damaging. They can destroy relationships, ruin lives and create distrust and discord. These lies need to be detected. And they can be, if we know how to listen out for them.

Forensic linguist Dr Kirsty King knows that, as convincing as some liars might be, their lies can be exposed by paying close attention to the language they use. It is possible for us to detect whether someone is being deceptive by listening out for key linguistic indicators in the way that they speak and the things that they say.

Drawing on research from forensic linguistics and psychology, this book presents real-life case studies and stories to show you how language can reveal the liars amongst us: from partners or colleagues misleading us to killers trying to get away with murder. The Language of Lies is an accessible toolkit that will help you decide whether to believe what you hear or not. Click to expand…

The Language Game (Morten H. Christiansen, Nick Chater)

9781473578418 Transworld Digital 2022

Catergory: Nonfiction, Reference & Language, Language Arts, Linguistics, Religion & Spirituality, Philosophy

**’Marvellously clear… playfully persuasive’ Richard Dawkins
‘Full of Fascinating details. A delight to read.’ Tim Harford
‘Highly original and convincing … a delight to read!’ – Daniel Everett**
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
What is language?
Why do we have it?
Why does that matter?
Language is perhaps humanity’s most astonishing accomplishment and one that remains poorly understood.
Upending centuries of scholarship (including, most recently, Chomsky and Pinker) The Language Game shows how people learn to talk not by acquiring fixed meanings and rules, but by picking up, reusing, and recombining countless linguistic fragments in novel ways.
Drawing on entertaining and persuasive examples from across the world the book explains:
Β· How our short-lived memory copes with the on-rushing deluge of sound that is everyday speech.
Β· Why it is that language is such a challenge for language scientists but learnt effortlessly by toddlers.
Β· Why the languages of the world are so spectacularly varied—and why no two people speak quite the same language.
Β· Why humans have language, but chimps don’t.
Β· How language gave us a big brain and changed the course of evolution.
Β· How language doesn’t limit, but does shape, how we think.
Β·And ultimately, why all we know about language should give us hope.
Christiansen and Chater’s The Language Game draws on a fascinating range of examples to show the way language works, has shaped our evolution and is critical to our future. Click to expand…

Plot: On a cross-country, redeye flight from Los Angeles to Boston, ten passengers awaken in Bangor, Maine, to find that the crew and most of their fellow passengers have disappeared. The airport shows no signs of life. Yet they hear “radio static” in the distance. Craig Toomey, an irritable investment banker on the verge of a breakdown, believes it is “The Langoliers,” monsters he was afraid of as a child who attack those who waste time. It’s mystery author Bob Jenkins who first theorizes that they have flown through a time rip. Bob declares they have entered a place that forbids time travelers to observe or interfere with past events. It turns out that Craig is right, in a way. Two creatures, followed by hundreds more, emerge from the forest and head for the plane, consuming everything in their path. Can the survivors manage to fly the plane back to Los Angeles, back to the correct time, before The Langoliers succeed in their deadly mission to destroy the plane and the world? Dinah Bellman, the young blind girl whose aunt did not survive the time rip, has the greatest insight of all.

The Landscapes Of Science And Religion – (Hannah Waite)

Catergory: Science & Engineering

The relationship between science and religion has long been a heated debate and is becoming an ever more popular topic. The scientific capacity to manipulate and change humans and their environment through genetic engineering, life extension, and AI is going to take a huge leap forward in the twenty-first century, provoking endless debates around humans "playing God".

But what do we mean by this? Asking this question is surprisingly hard work. Attempts to ‘essentialise’ science, let alone religion, quickly run into trouble. Where are the boundaries? Whose definition of science is definitive? Which concept of religious is the authoritative one?

Ultimately, neither "science" nor "religion" can be pinned down to one single meaning or definition. Rather, they encompass a family of definitions that relate to one another in a complex web of shifting ways. Drawing on extensive research with over a hundred leading thinkers in the UK-including Martin Rees, Brian Cox, Susan Greenfield, A.C. Grayling, Ray Tallis, Linda Woodhead, Steve Bruce, Adam Rutherford, Robin Dunbar, Francesca Stavrakopoulou, and Iain McGilchrist-The Landscapes of Science and Religion takes the much-needed step of asking what science and religion actually are, before turning to the familiar question of how they relate to one another.

Building on this, by paying particular attention to those who sense some form of conflict here, Spencer and Waite explore where the perceived conflict really lies. What exactly are people disagreeing about when they disagree about science and religion, and what, if anything, can we do to improve that disagreement and bring about a fruitful dialogue between these two important human endeavours.
