Book Description
======
In Edgar Award-winning author Meg Gardiner’s new stand-alone thriller,
an injured cop and an ex-thief hunt down a killer nobody else believes
exists.

When shots ring out in a crowded Los Angeles club, bartender Harper
Flynn watches helplessly as her boyfriend, Drew, is gunned down in the
crossfire. Then somebody throws a Molotov cocktail, and the club is
quickly engulfed in flames. LA Sheriff Deputy Aiden Garrison sees a
gunman in a hoodie and gas mask taking aim at Harper, but before he
can help her a wall collapses, bringing the building down and badly
injuring him.

A year later, Harper is trying to rebuild her life. She has quit her
job and gone back to college. Meanwhile, the investigation into the
shoot-out has been closed. The two gunmen were killed when the building
collapsed.

Certain that a third gunman escaped and is targeting the survivors,
Harper enlists the help of Aiden Garrison, the only person willing to
listen. But the traumatic brain injury he suffered has cut his career
short and left him with Fregoli syndrome, a rare type of face blindness
that causes the delusion that random people are actually a single person
changing disguises.

As Harper and Aiden delve into the case, Harper realizes that her presence
during the attack was no coincidence – and that her only ally is unstable,
mistrustful of her, and seeing the same enemy everywhere he looks.

Peter S Goodman How The World Ran Out Of Everything (Peter S. Goodman)

0063257920 HarperCollins 2024โ€‹

Catergory: Business, Politics, Nonfiction

By the New York Times’s Global Economics Correspondent, an extraordinary journey to understand the worldwide supply chain – exposing both the fascinating pathways of manufacturing and transportation that bring products to your doorstep, and the ruthless business logic that has left local communities at the mercy of a complex and fragile network for their basic necessities.
"A tale that will change how you look at the world." -Mark Leibovich
Named a Best Book of the Year by Foreign Policy and The Aspen Institute * Longlisted for the Porchlight Business Book Award
How does the wealthiest country on earth run out of protective gear in the middle of a public health catastrophe? How do its parents find themselves unable to locate crucially needed infant formula? How do its largest companies spend billions of dollars making cars that no one can drive for a lack of chips?
The last few years have radically highlighted the intricacy and fragility of the global supply chain. Enormous ships were stuck at sea, warehouses overflowed, and delivery trucks stalled. The result was a scarcity of everything from breakfast cereal to medical devices, from frivolous goods to lifesaving necessities. And while the scale of the pandemic shock was unprecedented, it underscored the troubling reality that the system was fundamentally at risk of descending into chaos all along. And it still is. Sabotaged by financial interests, loss of transparency in markets, and worsening working conditions for the people tasked with keeping the gears turning, our global supply chain has become perpetually on the brink of collapse.
In How the World Ran Out of Everything , award-winning journalist Peter S. Goodman reveals the fascinating innerworkings of our supply chain and the factors that have led to its constant, dangerous vulnerability. His reporting takes readers deep into the elaborate system, showcasing the triumphs and struggles of the human players who operate it-from factories in Asia and an almond grower in Northern California, to a group of striking railroad workers in Texas, to a truck driver who Goodman accompanies across hundreds of miles of the Great Plains. Through their stories, Goodman weaves a powerful argument for reforming a supply chain to become truly reliable and resilient, demanding a radical redrawing of the bargain between labor and shareholders, and deeper attention paid to how we get the things we need.
From one of the most respected economic journalists working today, How the World Ran Out of Everything is a fiercely smart, deeply informative look at how our supply chain operates, and why its reform is crucial-not only to avoid dysfunction in our day to day lives, but to protect the fate of our global fortunes. Peter S Beagle The Last Unicorn 2022 Version – (BEAGLE, Peter S.)

When New York Times Bestselling writer Tad Williams described Peter S. Beagle as a ‘bandit prince out to steal reader’s hearts’ he touched on a truth that readers have known for fifty years. Beagle, whose work has touched generations of readers around the world, has spun rich, romantic and very funny tales that have beguiled and enchanted readers of all ages.

Undeniably, his most famous work is the much loved classic, The Last Unicorn, which tells of unicorn who sets off on quest to discover whether she is the last of her kind, and of the people she meets on her journey. Never prolific, The Last Unicorn is one of only five novels Beagle has published since A Fine and Private Place appeared in 1960, and was followed by The Folk of the Air, The Innkeeper’s Song, and Tamsin.

During the first forty years of his career Beagle also wrote a small handful, scarcely a dozen, short stories. Classics like ‘Come Lady Death,’ ‘Lila and the Werewolf,’ ‘Julie’s Unicorn,’ ‘Professor Gottesman and the Indian Rhinoceros,’ and the tales that make up Giant Bones. And then, starting just five years ago, he turned his attention to short fiction in earnest, and produced a stunning array of new stories including the Hugo and Nebula Award winning follow up to The Last Unicorn, ‘Two Hearts,’ WSFA Small Press Award winner ‘El Regalo,’ and wonderful stories like the surrealist ‘The Last and Only,’ the haunting ‘The Rabbi s Hobby’ and others.

Mirror Kingdoms: The Best of Peter S. Beagle collects the very best of these stories, over 200,000 words worth, ranging across 45 years of his career from early stories to freshly minted tales that will surprise and amaze readers. It’s a book which shows, more than any other, just how successful this bandit prince from the streets of New York has been at stealing our hearts and underscores how much we hope he ll keep on doing so. Peter Robin Hiesinger The Self Assembling Brain How Neural Networks Grow Smarter (Peter Robin Hie…

0691241694 Princeton University Press 2023โ€‹

Catergory: Science, Nonfiction

What neurobiology and artificial intelligence tell us about how the brain builds itself
How does a neural network become a brain? While neurobiologists investigate how nature accomplishes this feat, computer scientists interested in artificial intelligence strive to achieve this through technology. The Self-Assembling Brain tells the stories of both fields, exploring the historical and modern approaches taken by the scientists pursuing answers to the quandary: What information is necessary to make an intelligent neural network?
As Peter Robin Hiesinger argues, "the information problem" underlies both fields, motivating the questions driving forward the frontiers of research. How does genetic information unfold during the years-long process of human brain development-and is there a quicker path to creating human-level artificial intelligence? Is the biological brain just messy hardware, which scientists can improve upon by running learning algorithms on computers? Can AI bypass the evolutionary programming of "grown" networks? Through a series of fictional discussions between researchers across disciplines, complemented by in-depth seminars, Hiesinger explores these tightly linked questions, highlighting the challenges facing scientists, their different disciplinary perspectives and approaches, as well as the common ground shared by those interested in the development of biological brains and AI systems. In the end, Hiesinger contends that the information content of biological and artificial neural networks must unfold in an algorithmic process requiring time and energy. There is no genome and no blueprint that depicts the final product. The self-assembling brain knows no shortcuts.
Written for readers interested in advances in neuroscience and artificial intelligence, The Self-Assembling Brain looks at how neural networks grow smarter. Click to expand…

Peter Phillps Titans Of Capital [Audiobook] – (Peter Phillips)

A fascinating examination of the rapid concentration of global capital, with chapters that focus on China and Russia.[/color]
In Titans of Capital, Peter Phillips, a political sociologist, poses three key research questions: To what extent do the wealthy influence-or even dominate-decision making that affects all of us in society? Who are the most powerful people? And how does the accumulation of capital work?
Networks of wealthy individuals have evolved since the COVID-19 pandemic, and Titans of Capital shows how the financial investments of transnational elites threaten human rights and the future of the planet. Phillips warns that while continued concentration of global capital increases the profits enjoyed by the global economy’s "Titans,", it also increases global inequality, starvation, and civil unrest, threatening the lives of the hundreds of millions of people living in extreme poverty. It is imperative to ask how we can reverse the concentration of Titan wealth and revitalize grassroots democracy unbridled by extreme wealth. Identifying 117 global Titans by name and exposing the networks and interests that unite them provides listeners opposed to militarism and committed to economic equality with crucial tools to directly engage the power elite who endanger life on earth.

Catergory: History, Military, Nonfiction

One of the bloodiest battles of modern warfare-a military tragedy that would come to define a generation
On July 1, 1916, the British Army launched the "Big Push" that was supposed to bring an end to the horrific stalemate on the Western Front between British, French, and German forces. What resulted was one of the greatest single human catastrophes in the history of warfare. As the oral historian at the Imperial War Museum in London, Peter Hart has brought to light new material never before seen or heard.
