The Agony Of Eros Byung Chul Han (Byung-Chul Han)

0262533375 MIT Press Ltd, US 2017

Catergory: Philosophy, Nonfiction

An argument that love requires the courage to accept self-negation for the sake of discovering the Other. Byung-Chul Han is one of the most widely read philosophers in Europe today, a member of the new generation of German thinkers that includes Markus Gabriel and Armen Avanessian. In The Agony of Eros, a bestseller in Germany, Han considers the threat to love and desire in today’s society. For Han, love requires the courage to accept self-negation for the sake of discovering the Other. In a world of fetishized individualism and technologically mediated social interaction, it is the Other that is eradicated, not the self. In today’s increasingly narcissistic society, we have come to look for love and desire within the "inferno of the same."
Han offers a survey of the threats to Eros, drawing on a wide range of sources-Lars von Trier’s film Melancholia, Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, Fifty Shades of Grey, Michel Foucault (providing a scathing critique of Foucault’s valorization of power), Martin Buber, Hegel, Baudrillard, Flaubert, Barthes, Plato, and others. Han considers the "pornographication" of society, and shows how pornography profanes eros; addresses capitalism’s leveling of essential differences; and discusses the politics of eros in today’s "burnout society." To be dead to love, Han argues, is to be dead to thought itself.
Concise in its expression but unsparing in its insight, The Agony of Eros is an important and provocative entry in Han’s ongoing analysis of contemporary society.
This remarkable essay, an intellectual experience of the first order, affords one of the best ways to gain full awareness of and join in one of the most pressing struggles of the day: the defense, that is to say-as Rimbaud desired it-the "reinvention" of love.

Book Description

This seventh volume of Will and Ariel Durant’s renowned series, The
Story of Civilization, chronicles the history of European civilization
from 1558 to 1648.

The Age of Reason Begins brings together a fascinating network of stories
in the discussion of the bumpy road toward the Enlightenment. This is
the age of great monarchs and greater artists – on the one hand, Elizabeth
the First of England, Philip II of Spain, and Henry IV of France; on
the other, Shakespeare, Cervantes, Montaigne, and Rembrandt. It also
encompasses the heyday of Francis Bacon, Galileo, Giordano Bruno, and
Descartes, the fathers of modern science and philosophy. But it is equally
an age of extreme violence, a moment in which all Europe was embroiled
in the horrible Thirty Years’ War – in some respects, the real first
world war. This chapter in cultural history is one that can’t be missed.-

Book Description

An engrossing volume on European civilization by Pulitzer Prize-winning
historians Will and Ariel Durant.

The Age of Napoleon, the 11th and final volume of the Story of Civilization,
surveys the amazing chain of events that wrenched Europe out of the
Enlightenment and into the age of democracy. In this masterful work,
listeners will encounter the French Revolution from the storming of
the Bastille to the guillotining of the king; the revolution’s leaders
– Danton, Desmoulins, Robespierre, and Saint-Just – all cut down by
the reign of terror they inaugurated; Napoleon’s meteoric rise from
provincial Corsican military student to emperor and commander of the
largest army in history; Napoleon’s fall – his army’s destruction in
the snows of Russia, his exile to Elba, his escape and reconquest of
the throne, and his ultimate defeat at Waterloo by the combined forces
of Europe; and the birth of Romanticism and the dawning of a new age
of active democracy and a rising middle class, laying the foundation
for a new era.

Book Description
======
This volume of the Pulitzer PrizeΓ»winning series offers a comprehensive
view of European civilization during the long and powerful reign of
Louis XIV.

Will and Ariel Durant continue their magisterial history of the Western
world as France exerted an almost hypnotic dominance over the European
continent. Their expansive narrative begins at the end of the Thirty
Years War, a conflict which decimated the Holy Roman Empire and allowed
France to flourish. This was also the time when Louis XIV, at the age
of five, came to the throne.

Book One examines the French zenith from a number of perspectives: from
the politics at court to the kingÆs relationship to the church, the
arts, and literary greats such as Moliere and Racine. In Book Two, the
narrative moves to England, where Oliver Cromwell leads a revolt against
monarchy, and authors including John Milton and Jonathan Swift write
their immortal epics. With five books in all, the authors offer a sweeping
survey of the era, from Peter the GreatÆs Russia to the advances in
science and medicine, Isaac NewtonÆs revolutionary ideas, and the great
philosophical debate between faith and reason.

A History of Medieval Civilization (Christian, Islamic, and Judaic)
from Constantine to Dante, AD 325 – 1300

The fourth volume in Will Durant’s Pulitzer Prize-winning series, The
Age of Faith surveys the medieval achievements and modern significance
of Christian, Islamic, and Judaic life and culture. Like the other volumes
in the Story of Civilization series, this is a self-contained work,
which at the same time fits into a comprehensive history of mankind.
It includes the dramatic stories of St. Augustine, Hypatia, Justinian,
Mohammed, Harun al-Rashid, Charlemagne, William the Conqueror, Eleanor
of Aquitaine, Richard the Lionheart, Saladin, Maimonides, St. Francis,
St. Thomas Aquinas, Roger Bacon, and many others, all in the perspective
of integrated history. The greatest love stories in literature – of
HΘloise and AbΘlard, of Dante and Beatrice – are here retold with enthralling
scholarship.

The Age Of Extraction Tim Wu (Tim Wu)

1847927122 Vintage 2025

Catergory: Business, Law, Politics, Nonfiction

Tech platforms manipulate attention, extract wealth, and deepen inequality. In this new book, Tim Wu (The Attention Merchants) explains how we can reclaim control and create a balanced economy that works for everyone.
"The magic of Tim Wu’s The Age of Extraction is its simplicity. Wu deftly breaks down one of the greatest challenges of our age-the unaccountable power of tech platforms-into such digestible pieces that the solutions for what to do become dead obvious. Essential reading."-Karen Hao, author of Empire of AI: Dreams and Nightmares in Sam Altman’s OpenAI

"It’s not just in your head-your online life is draining your wallet…. [The Age of Extraction is] a sharp and eye-opening introduction to how we arrived at platform capitalism-where no good click goes unmonetized."-Kirkus Reviews
Our world is dominated by a handful of tech platforms. They provide great conveniences and entertainment, but also stand as some of the most effective instruments of wealth extraction ever invented, seizing immense amounts of money, data, and attention from all of us. An economy driven by digital platforms and AI influence offers the potential to enrich us, and also threatens to marginalize entire industries, widen the wealth gap, and foster a two-class nation. As technology evolves and our markets adapt, can society cultivate a better life for everyone? Is it possible to balance economic growth and egalitarianism, or are we too far gone?
Tim Wu-the preeminent scholar and former White House official who coined the phrase "net neutrality"-explores the rise of platform power and details the risks and rewards of working within such systems. The Age of Extraction tells the story of an Internet that promised widespread wealth and democracy in the 1990s and 2000s, only to create new economic classes and aid the spread of autocracy instead. Wu frames our current moment with lessons from recent history-from generative AI and predictive social data to the antimonopoly and crypto movements-and envisions a future where technological advances can serve the greatest possible good. Concise and hopeful, The Age of Extraction offers consequential proposals for taking back control in order to achieve a better economic balance and prosperity for all. Click to expand…
