Book Description
======
Renowned for her highly acclaimed and best-selling British histories,
Alison Weir has in recent years made a major impact on the fiction scene
with her novels about Queen Elizabeth and Lady Jane Grey. In this latest
offering, she imagines the world of Eleanor of Aquitaine, the beautiful
12th-century woman who was queen of France until she abandoned her royal
husband for the younger man who would become king of England.

In a relationship based on lust and a mutual desire for great power,
Henry II and Eleanor took over the English throne in 1154, thus beginning
one of the most influential reigns and tumultuous royal marriages in
all of history. In this novel, Weir uses her extensive knowledge to
paint a most vivid portrait of this fascinating woman.

Captain Jim Nicholson The Dark Island & Return To The Islands Two Full Cast Classic BBC Radio Spy…

BBC Digital Audio 2026

Catergory: Literature & Fiction

A double serving of thrilling vintage spy drama featuring the tenacious Captain Jim Nicholson

A treat from the archive: two classic dramas from the writer of Z-Cars, Robert Barr, set during the height of the Cold War.

The Dark Island is a thrilling story of espionage set among the remote, mist-veiled islands of the Outer Hebrides. Two Intelligence Officers discover an escape route for defectors from Britain. The route, ending behind the Iron Curtain, involves the use of Russian trawlers plying outside territorial waters. Edward de Souza (Coronation Street, Doctor Who) stars as Jim Nicholson in this full-cast drama packed with unexpected twists and turns that will keep you gripped until the very end.

In Return to the Islands, the indefatigable Captain Jim Nicholson heads back to the atmospheric islands of the north when a body is discovered near a secret training base. Things take a sinister turn when an elite trainee is taken hostage. An enemy agent is captured and interrogated but can Nicholson and his team solve the mystery in time? When tragedy strikes, the team are pushed to their limit and embark on a deadly endgame.

Former BBC war correspondent Robert Barr is best remembered writing for BBC TV’s police dramas Z-Cars and Softly Softly. He also wrote the long-running radio series Detective. The Dark Island was originally made for TV in 1962 as well as being published as a novel in 1972. This is a gem from the archive, perfect for fans of espionage thrillers and vintage drama performed by a great cast.

Please note: due to the age of these vintage recordings, the sound quality may vary.

Capitalism A Global History (Sven Beckert)

9780735220843 Penguin Press 2025

Catergory: Business, History, Nonfiction

**A New York Times Notable Book β€’ A Financial Times Best Book of the Year
*"*A learned, formidable and vivid story. Readers around the world will study and ponder this monumental work of history, agreeing and arguing with it, all the while affirming its generational importance, for decades to come." – Marcus Rediker, The New York Times
"Epic. Read this book and you will learn innumerable things you did not previously know culled from places you have never been. [Readers], including me, will be genuinely grateful for exposure to this breadth of scholarship and be glad to have a valuable tool of reference on their shelves." -John Kay, Financial Times
A landmark event years in the making, a brilliant global narrative that unravels the defining story of the past thousand years of human history**
No other phenomenon has shaped human history as decisively as capitalism. It structures how we live and work, how we think about ourselves and others, how we organize our politics. Sven Beckert, author of the Bancroft Prize-winning Empire of Cotton, places the story of capitalism within the largest conceivable geographical and historical framework, tracing its history during the past millennium and across the world. An epic achievement, his book takes us into merchant businesses in Aden and car factories in Turin, onto the terrifyingly violent sugar plantations in Barbados, and within the world of women workers in textile factories in today’s Cambodia.
Capitalism, argues Beckert, was born global. Emerging from trading communities across Asia, Africa, and Europe, capitalism’s radical recasting of economic life rooted itself only gradually. But then it burst onto the world scene, as a powerful alliance between European states and merchants propelled them, and their economic logic, across the oceans. This, Beckert shows, was modern capitalism’s big bang, and one of its epicenters was the slave labor camps of the Caribbean. This system, with its hierarchies that haunt us still, provided the liftoff for the radical transformations of the Industrial Revolution. Fueled by vast productivity increases along with coal and oil, capitalism pulled down old ways of life to crown itself the defining force of the modern world. This epic drama, shaped by state-backed institutions and imperial expansion, corresponded at no point to an idealized dream of free markets.
Drawing on archives on six continents, Capitalism locates important modes of agency, resistance, innovation, and ruthless coercion everywhere in the world, opening the aperture from heads of state to rural cultivators. Beckert shows that despite the dependence on expansion, there always have been, and are still, areas of human life that the capitalist revolution has yet to reach.
By chronicling capitalism’s global history, Beckert exposes the reality of the system that now seems simply "natural." It is said that people can more easily imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism. If there is one ultimate lesson in this extraordinary book, it’s how to leave that behind. Though cloaked in a false timelessness and universality, capitalism is, in reality, a recent human invention. Sven Beckert doesn’t merely tote up capitalism’s debits and credits. He shows us how to look through and beyond it to imagine a different and larger world. Click to expand…

Capital Critique Of Political Economy Volume 1 (Marx, Karl)

0691190070 Princeton University Press 2024

Catergory: Nonfiction, Social & Cultural Studies, Political Science, Politics, Economic Conditions, Government, Communism & Socialism

Marx for the twenty-first century
The first new English translation in fifty years-and the only one based on the last German edition revised by Marx himself
Featuring extensive original commentary, including a foreword by acclaimed political theorist Wendy Brown
"An astounding achievement."-China MiΓ©ville, author of October: The Story of the Russian Revolution
Karl Marx (1818-1883) was living in exile in England when he embarked on an ambitious, multivolume critique of the capitalist system of production. Though only the first volume saw publication in Marx’s lifetime, it would become one of the most consequential books in history. This magnificent new edition of Capital is a translation of Marx for the twenty-first century. It is the first translation into English to be based on the last German edition revised by Marx himself, the only version that can be called authoritative, and it features extensive commentary and annotations by Paul North and Paul Reitter that draw on the latest scholarship and provide invaluable perspective on the book and its complicated legacy. At once precise and boldly readable, this translation captures the momentous scale and sweep of Marx’s thought while recovering the elegance and humor of the original source.
For Marx, our global economic system is relentlessly driven by "value"-to produce it, capture it, trade it, and, most of all, to increase it. Lifespans are shortened under the demand for ever-greater value. Days are lengthened, work is intensified, and the division of labor deepens until it leaves two classes, owners and workers, in constant struggle for life and livelihood. In Capital, Marx reveals how value came to tyrannize our world, and how the history of capital is a chronicle of bloodshed, colonization, and enslavement.
With a foreword by Wendy Brown and an afterword by William Clare Roberts, this is a critical edition of Capital for our time, one that faithfully preserves the vitality and directness of Marx’s German prose and renders his ideas newly relevant to modern readers. Click to expand…

Book Description
======
He’s homeless. He’s on the run. And he wants revenge.

Marcus Battle has left behind his home.

Now he’s on a seemingly impossible mission to find a missing child.
But can he balance that responsibility with his deep, primal desire
to exact revenge on the men who destroyed his solitary existence?

The world he discovers on his journey isn’t the one he remembers
before a pneumonic plague called The Scourge killed two-thirds of the
world’s population. It is lawless, depraved, and far deadlier than the
disease which created it.

Battle made a promise to find that child. It’s a promise he regrets
more acutely with every step of the journey where he is as much the
hunter as he is the hunted.

Description: Adam Macias has been thrown a few curve balls in his life, but losing his VA grant because his car broke down and missing a class was the one that struck him out. One relative away from homelessness, he has taking the bus to Sacramento, where his cousin has offered a house-sitting job and a new start. He has one goal, and that’s to get his life back on track. Friends, pets, lovers need not apply.
Finn Stewart takes one look at Adam as he’s applying to Candy Heaven and decides he’s much too fascinating to leave alone. Finn is bright and shiny – and has never been hurt. Adam is wary of his attention from the very beginning – Finn is dangerous to every sort of peace Adam is forging, and Adam may just be too damaged to let him in at all.
But Finn is tenacious, and Adam’s new boss, Darrin, doesn’t take bullshit for an answer. Adam is going to have to ask himself which is harder – letting Finn in or living without him? With the holidays approaching, it seems like an easy question, but Adam knows from experience that life is seldom simple. And the world seldom cooperates with hope, faith, or the plans of cats and men. Click to expand…

Can Such Things Be? (Ambrose Bierce)

1853265705 Wordsworth Editions Ltd 01/01/1997 1997

Catergory: Science Fiction & Fantasy, Horror, Fiction & Literature, Historical, Kids, Fiction

"Can Such Things Be?" is a collection of short stories by Ambrose Bierce, whose first edition appeared in 1893.
24 short stories in fairly typical Bierce fashion – ghostly, spooky, to be read (or listened to) in the dark, perhaps with a light crackling fire burning dimly in the background. Stories of ghosts, apparitions, and strange, inexplicable occurrences are prevalent in these tales, some of which occur on or near Civil War fields of battle, some in country cottages, and some within urban areas. "Can Such Things Be?" implies and relates that anything is possible, at any time. Click to expand…

Since the earliest days of universities, students have told stories about their daily lives, often emphasizing extraordinary, surprising, and baffling events. Legends often dramatize certain hopes and fears, showing how stressful and exciting the college experience can be. From the stereotype of the absent minded professor to the adventures of spring break to the mysterious world of fraternities and sororities, campus legends have also become an important part of popular culture. This book provides a convenient, readable introduction to campus legends.
While the volume focuses primarily on legends, it also explores rumors, pranks, rituals, and other related folklore types. The book begins with an overview of college and university folklore. This is followed by a discussion of particular types of legends and other folklore genres. The handbook then presents some 50 examples of college and university legends, including ghost stories, urban legends, food lore, drinking tales, murders and suicides, and many others. These examples are accompanied by brief comments. The book next surveys scholarship on campus folklore and discusses the place of college and university legends in films, television, literature, and popular culture. The volume cites numerous print and electronic resources. Click to expand…
