Lekarz, pisarz litewski, współtwórca zakazanej twórczości publicystycznej, autor pierwszej litewskiej powieści historycznej Algimantas. Vincas Pietaris urodził się w rodzinie chłopskiej. Kilka lat naukę pobierał w szkole początkowej w Pilwiszkach (lit. Pilvišk?s),później uczęszczał do czteroklasowego gimnazjum w Mariampolu (lit. Marijampol?) oraz do chłopięcego gimnazjum w Suwałkach. W latach 1870-1875 studiował na Wydziale Fizyczno-Matematycznym Uniwersytetu Moskiewskiego, następne cztery lata ? na Wydziale Medycyny. Po ukończeniu nauki mieszkał i pracował w Damjansku. Ożeniwszy się z córką pułkownika rezerwy Marią Kosowicz, już z nową rodziną przeniósł się do Ustiużny (Obwód Wołogodzki, Rosja). W 1896 r. wrócił na Litwę, tutaj się zatrzymał w Kownie w mieszkaniu księdza Adomasa Jakszty. Niedługo potem wrócił do Ustiużny i tam już przebywał do końca życia. Od czasów wczesnej młodości V. Pietaris podkreślał szczególną wagę kultury narodowej, języka. W czasach najtrudniejszych narodowi działał na rzecz litewskości.
